Apple Crop Expansion Study
in Jammu & Kashmir
A large-scale primary research study conducted by DataNexa Research in official partnership with the Directorate of Horticulture, Government of Jammu & Kashmir β covering 9 apple-growing districts across the Kashmir Valley.
Understanding Apple Crop Expansion Across the Kashmir Valley
Jammu & Kashmir is India’s principal apple-producing region, with horticulture forming the backbone of its economy. Apple cultivation accounts for nearly 70β75% of the region’s total fruit production and supports the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of farming families. DataNexa Research was engaged as the official local field data collection partner for this government-commissioned study, deploying trained field teams across all major apple-growing districts of J&K to conduct quantitative surveys, in-depth interviews, and comprehensive stakeholder consultations.
Coverage Across 9 Districts of Kashmir
The study covered all major apple-growing districts β from high-density production zones in South Kashmir to emerging orchard areas in North Kashmir.
| District | Apple Farmers | Other Farmers | Total Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kupwara | 48 | 16 | 64 |
| Baramulla | 48 | 16 | 64 |
| Shopian | 48 | 16 | 64 |

Mixed-Methods Field Research Approach
DataNexa deployed a rigorous mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys with qualitative deep-dives β using CAPI-based tools with daily data sync and quality validation at every step.
Who We Spoke To
The study captured insights from a diverse set of stakeholders across the entire apple value chain.
What the Study Set Out to Achieve
- Review existing government schemes including HADP and other programmes aimed at enhancing apple production, quality, and infrastructure.
- Engage with farmers, service providers, exporters, and industry representatives to understand bottlenecks and challenges in the current system.
- Analyze strengths and weaknesses of service providers β technical support, input suppliers β and propose solutions to expand their capacity.
- Identify best practices from other apple-producing regions such as Himachal Pradesh and propose applicable recommendations for J&K.
- Draft actionable policy recommendations and develop a comprehensive action plan for improving apple production and post-harvest management.
- Study the scope of High Density Plantation (HDP) expansion and assess gaps in cold storage, packhouse, and nursery infrastructure.
From the Ground
Our field teams documented the study across orchards, markets, packhouses and government offices throughout the Kashmir Valley.
